Artist Bio

I’m Garrett Porter, an artist based in Northern California whose work explores the intersection of spirituality, geometry, and abstract visual language. Drawing has been part of my life since early childhood and deepened through four years of high school art, including two personally chosen AP courses, followed by several years of university-level drawing study. I hold a degree in Linguistics from Concordia University in Montréal, Canada, which helped shape my curiosity about systems of meaning and perception. I also experience synesthesia, a blending of the senses that allows me to perceive colour and spatial forms in music. This sensory interweaving deepens my creative process, offering glimpses into a layered reality that bridges the internal and external worlds. My reserved yet inquisitive nature guides my exploration of the unseen, the mysterious, and the intricately beautiful. Through both visual art and written reflection, including an occasional blog, I share my interest in perception, spirituality, and the deeper structures of experience that lie beneath the surface of everyday life.

Artist Statement

My art emerges from a place of deep mindfulness and presence. In this quiet space, the noise of the everyday fades, and I become attuned to subtle sensory impressions and internal landscapes. Rather than forcing a subject, I let it reveal itself, allowing a deeper understanding of my own presence.

My current art practice centres on drawing, where I explore the relationship between geometry, repetition, and arrangement. I begin each drawing with a precise grid in pencil and finish it in ink, layering intricate structures into striking compositions. These forms reflect both my lived sensory experiences and my spiritual curiosity. I have also painted with acrylics to express other abstract ideas and have occasionally delved into the perception of motion through video, to notice and honour my deep connection with nature and her elements.

Nature has been a grounding force in both my personal and creative life. As a child, I spent hours alone barefoot in the coastal landscapes of Northern California, developing a quiet receptivity that still informs my process today. Later, while studying Linguistics in Montréal, Canada, I reflected on this connection within the contrast of a structured urban environment.
Since returning to California in 2021, I continue to explore geometry, synaesthesia, and capture my artistic vision through occasional blog writings and short videos.

My work invites viewers into a reflective space where the boundaries between sense and spirit blur, and where perception becomes a source of wonder.
